Blood Brother Review: It just got personal

The Winchester Holy Grail quest has been ground to a halt by Kevin Tran, who WAS in advanced placement, after all, outwitting our heroes at every turn, and Dean insists on underestimating him out of pride. Now Sam sits by himself in a hotel room, haunted by memories of his normal life, while Dean attacks a nest of “Vampirates” (isn’t that the third thing you say?) with a vampire, who doesn’t seem to have what it takes to hunt monsters in the real world. What happened to the peaceful perspective we saw at the end of “Bitten”? We saw no argument between the brothers as they peacefully let a werewolf slip into the night.  There was a glimmer of hope that maturity was on the horizon, but I guess it’s always calm before the storm. And of course, the silent, jaw working anger in Sam’s face as he fights back the instinct to kill the vampire.  It’s going to take another whole episode of yelling to work through this mess. Winchester dirt slinging: “What friends?  All your friends are dead!” “Last I checked you took a year off.  I’m asking for a day.” “You DID try to kill his mother.” “Did you have a stroke?” Dean’s got a guilt complex that’s binding him up like a kid in a cheese shop.  Sam’s so willing to be angry that he’s willing to just be Dean. I can hear Bobby now –  “How’s that workin’ out for ya?” Chuckleheads. We’re getting closer to finding out what happened in purgatory – Cas is still with Dean, despite his and Benny’s clearly stated opinions on the folly of it all.  Dean doesn’t take no for an answer, ever, and it’s starting to catch him.  It didn’t look so good for Dean when he was watching Benny get caught in the vampire nest like...

Supernatural 8.5 Recap & Review: Blood Brother

Benny is out for blood.  Vampire Blood. After attacking members of his former nest, Benny lies bloodied and broken and calls Dean for help. Sam and Dean find themselves in Enid, Oregon looking for Kevin, who has once again duped them with a fake credit card trail. Dean, still silent regarding his escape from Purgatory, tells Sam he needs some personal time to help a friend.  Dean departs to find Benny, and four story lines emerge: Purgatory Dean, Benny and Castiel fight off Leviathan while trying to make it to the portal back to the world.  Benny and Castiel hold no love for one another, but are still together and following Dean’s wishes to bring Castiel with them.  Benny and Castiel reason that Castiel’s presence is attracting too many purgatory residents, and further, that a seraph cannot likely cross the void.  Dean remains firm in his conviction that Castiel is coming with them. Sam’s Normal Life While waiting for “Dog” to recuperate, Sam befriends the hotel owners and begins working for them as a handyman.  This lands him under Amelia’s sink, and gives him a view into her life that she would rather he didn’t have.  Amelia is alone, without family or direction, living in a hotel for months.  She finds Sam “creepy”, particularly his “Army/Navy Surplus” wardrobe and creepy sideburns. Benny’s Salvation Benny, in his first vampire life, is second only to his maker in his nest. Benny betrays the nest and goes to bagged blood to live a ‘normal life’ for the love of a woman.  His maker eventually tracks him down and sends him to purgatory.  Before he dies, he realizes that his maker has killed his woman. Present Day Dean joins Benny in his mission to exact revenge on his nest.  Sam ruminates in Enid, Oregon, with no idea of Dean’s whereabouts.  Benny finds his...
